Lukas Sadowski passes the Comprehensive Exam

Lukas Sadowski successfully passed his comprehensive exam. He celebrated with the traditional champagne in the lab, along with a trip to the rock-climbing gym (which he sorely missed during the month-long exam process). Congratulations Lukas!

Callisto Awarded DAAD Scholarship

Callisto MacIsaac was awarded a DAAD RISE Fellowship to enable her to work in the lab of Prof. Stefan Hecht at the Humbolt University in Berlin, Germany. She will spend 8 months in Berlin learning about the chemistry of graphene nano-ribbons. Congratulations Callisto!

Brian and Callisto Win at SOUSCC

Callisto and Brian presented their undergraduate thesis project results at this past Saturday’s Southwestern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference, which was held at the University of Guelph. Callisto won first prize for her talk on covalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes with PEG to improve water solubility, and Brian won second prize in the same symposium for his talk on the supramolecular functionalization of carbon nanotubes with conjugated polymers. Congratulations Callisto and Brian!

Nicole passes the Comprehensive Exam

Nicole Rice successfully passed her comprehensive exam. The traditional celebration with a bottle of champagne followed, with Nicole demonstrating outstanding technique in popping the cork! Congratulations to Nicole!

Ryan passes the Comprehensive Exam

Ryan Chadwick successfully passed his comprehensive exam, and celebrated with the traditional opening of champagne in the lab (along with some nice “pass/fail” cupcakes provided by Callisto). Congratulations to Ryan!

Xin and Patigul had their biosensor paper accepted in the Journal of Materials Chemistry

The paper is entitled “Conjugated Polyelectrolyte Complexes with Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Amperometric Detection of Glucose with Inherent Anti-Interference Properties” and describes the latest results of Patiul’s polymer-nanotube complexes being used in Xin’s biosensors, including the analysis of real blood samples. Congratulations to Xin and Patigul for continued great results in their collaboration.
