Greg's paper with Jean Duhamel Accepted

Greg Bahun’s latest collaborative paper with Prof. Jean Duhamel (U of Waterloo), entitled “Studying Pyrene-Labelled Macromolecules with the Model Free Analysis” was accepted in the Journal of Physical Chemistry.

Alex Wins Award

Alex, and the entire Adronov Group, was awarded the 2013 Award for Research Excellence in Materials Chemistry, given annually by the Materials Division of the CIC. Alex will present his award lecture at the CSC meeting in Quebec City in May, 2013.

Lukas's Collaborative Paper Accepted

The long-awaited collaborative paper between Lukas Sadowski and Ferdinand Gonzaga (Brook Group) was accepted for publication in the Journal of Polymer Science A: Polymer Chemistry. The paper is entitled “Highly efficient divergent synthesis of dendrimers via metal-free “click” chemistry.”

Sabrina VanGyzen receives the 2012 Brooman Bursary

The Brooman Bursary is awarded to top MSc level students in our department. This year, Sabrina VanGyzen was nominated and received this prestigious award. Congratulations Sabrina!

Ryan Chadwick wins Impact Award

Ryan Chadwick was recognized by the department with an Impact Award, which is given to graduate students who have published high-impact papers in the past year. Ryan’s paper entitled “Polymer Grafting to Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes: Effect of Chain Length on Solubility, Graft Density and Mechanical Properties of Macroscopic Structures” was published in the journal Small.

New Thesis Students Start in the Adronov Group

Welcome to Chris Colaneri and Vlad Kardelis, as they start their 4GO9 thesis projects in the group. Chris will work on dendrimer synthesis for targeted diagnostic imaging, while Vlad will work on new polymers for carbon nanotube functionalization.

New Graduate Students Start in the Adronov Group

Two new graduate students have begun studies in the Adronov Group. Shuai Liang did his MSc thesis at Memorial University prior to coming to McMaster. Stuart McNelles completed his BSc at UOIT prior to arriving at McMaster. Welcome to Shuai and Stuart!

Xin Pang Finishes Postdoc - Starts at Canmet

Xin Pang, who has been a postdoctoral fellow in the Adronov Group for nearly 3 years, has accepted a position at CANMET, the national materials research laboratory in Hamilton, ON. Congratulations to Xin! We wish her all the best in her career at CANMET.

Patigul and Mokhtar - Another Paper Accepted

Congratulations to Patigul and Mokhtar for having their paper, entitled “Supramolecular Functionalization of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs) with a Photoisomerizable Conjugated Polymer”, accepted in Macromolecules.

Lukas Sadowski passes the Comprehensive Exam

Lukas Sadowski successfully passed his comprehensive exam. He celebrated with the traditional champagne in the lab, along with a trip to the rock-climbing gym (which he sorely missed during the month-long exam process). Congratulations Lukas!

Callisto Awarded DAAD Scholarship

Callisto MacIsaac was awarded a DAAD RISE Fellowship to enable her to work in the lab of Prof. Stefan Hecht at the Humbolt University in Berlin, Germany. She will spend 8 months in Berlin learning about the chemistry of graphene nano-ribbons. Congratulations Callisto!

Brian and Callisto Win at SOUSCC

Callisto and Brian presented their undergraduate thesis project results at this past Saturday’s Southwestern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference, which was held at the University of Guelph. Callisto won first prize for her talk on covalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes with PEG to improve water solubility, and Brian won second prize in the same symposium for his talk on the supramolecular functionalization of carbon nanotubes with conjugated polymers. Congratulations Callisto and Brian!

Nicole passes the Comprehensive Exam

Nicole Rice successfully passed her comprehensive exam. The traditional celebration with a bottle of champagne followed, with Nicole demonstrating outstanding technique in popping the cork! Congratulations to Nicole!

Xin and Patigul had their biosensor paper accepted in the Journal of Materials Chemistry

The paper is entitled “Conjugated Polyelectrolyte Complexes with Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Amperometric Detection of Glucose with Inherent Anti-Interference Properties” and describes the latest results of Patiul’s polymer-nanotube complexes being used in Xin’s biosensors, including the analysis of real blood samples. Congratulations to Xin and Patigul for continued great results in their collaboration.

Mokhtar Imit Wins Travel Award

Mokhtar was successful in his application for a travel award to attend the CSC meeting in Calgary this coming May. Congratulations to Mokhtar!

Matt Parrott hired as Assistant Professor at UNC

Matt Parrott completed his Ph.D. in the Adronov Group (co-supervised by John Valliant) in 2009 and has been a postdoctoral fellow in the group of Prof. Joe DeSimone since leaving McMaster. Last week his appointment to the Department of Radiology at UNC’s School of Medicine was announced. He will be carrying out research on novel polymer structures as radio-imaging agents, and on novel methods for delivery of nano-particles as drug carriers. Congratulations to Matt!
