Gary Schrobilgen and Raman Chirakal Receive Lifetime Achievement Awards Print E-mail

Professors Raman Chirakal and Gary J. Schrobilgen were presented Lifetime Achievement Awards on March 28, 2012 from SciFluor Life Sciences (www.scifluor.com) at the 243rd American Chemical Society National Meeting & Exposition in San Diego, CA. The awards were presented by SciFluor’s Vice President of Scientific Operations, Mark Duggan, who presented the awards to Professors Chirakal and Schrobilgen at the conclusion of a Fluorine-18 Radiochemistry Symposium. This was the first time that the ACS Division of Fluorine Chemistry dedicated an entire day to this topic, and it served as a fitting backdrop to recognize the extraordinary contributions that these two individuals have made to the field.

 

Professor Schrobilgen was recognized for the significant contributions he has made to the fields of synthetic and structural inorganic fluorine chemistry especially as regards the extremely challenging chemistry of the noble-gases. The transfer of his work to practical applications in the field of Nuclear Medicine via his collaboration with Professor Chirakal has subsequently provided a platform for clinical advances that are likely to provide long-term impact and significant improvements in patient care.

 

Professor Chirakal’s work in the McMaster Nuclear Medicine Group has, in turn, provided the foundation for major advances in non-invasive investigation of cerebral metabolism and brain disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease and Schizophrenia by using positron emission tomography (PET). The recent procedure his team developed for the 18F labeling of the rare sugar D-allose to investigate breast tumors is yet another example of the powerful contribution this technology will ultimately make to clinical medicine.
