On behalf of the Faculty of Science, I am pleased to announce the following senior administrative academic appointments that were approved by the Board of Governors yesterday. Both individuals will begin five-year terms effective July 1, 2012.

Dr. Bruce Newbold is the new Director of the School of Geography and Earth Sciences. Dr. Newbold is a two time alumnus of McMaster having earned his undergraduate and doctoral degrees in the field of geography. He joined the University as a faculty member in 2000 as a tenured Associate Professor, and was promoted to full Professor in 2006. His research focuses on immigration, migration and aging issues. He is the Director of the McMaster Institute of Environment and Health (MIEH), holding this position since 2004. Dr. Newbold has shown excellence in teaching, research and service, and we look forward to his leadership over the coming years. Welcome Bruce.

The new Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology is Dr. William (Willie) Leigh. Dr. Leigh is a long serving faculty member in Chemistry and Chemical Biology having joined the Department in 1983 and becoming full Professor in 1992. He has been involved in numerous scholarly and professional activities throughout is academic career, both internal and external to the University. Dr. Leigh has also served previously as Department Chair from 1999-2004. His research interests focus on Group 14 reactive intermediates; organosilicon, organogermanium, and organotin photochemistry; and physical organic chemistry and photochemistry. Dr. Leigh brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position and the Department, and I know that Chemistry and Chemical Biology is in good hands. Welcome back Willie.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Drs. Pavlos Kanaroglou and Brian McCarry for their outstanding contributions as Director of the School of Geography & Earth Sciences and Chair of the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology, respectively. I wish them continued success over the coming years. I would also like to thank the many members of the Ad Hoc Selection Committees for their many hours of service as part of this important process.

Please join me in welcoming and congratulating Bruce and Willie on their appointments. Please share this message as appropriate.
