Graduate Student Highlights

We celebrate the accomplishments of all graduate students, and highlight here some of the individuals who have received distinctions for their outstanding academic performance over the past year.

Recent Ph.D. graduate and NSERC postdoctoral fellow, John Paul Pezacki won the John Charles Polanyi Prize in Chemistry. Established in 1986 by the Ontario Government, the Polanyi Prizes are awarded in honour of Dr. John Charles Polanyi (University of Toronto), co-recipient of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Each year Polanyi Prizes are awarded to outstanding scholars and researchers (young faculty members and postdoctoral fellows) working at an Ontario university in the area of Chemistry, Literature, Physics, Physiology, Medicine, or Economic Science.

At the international level, Roger Liu has been granted an Association of International Education in Japan (AIEJ) Short-term Student Exchange Promotion Program (Inbound) Scholarship (1999-00) to study for one year at the Department of Macromolecular Science, Osaka University (Japan), under the supervision of Professor Yotaro Morishima.

Ph.D. student Adrienne Boden was presented with the Scholarship for Environmental Assessment and Environmental Health by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. at The Financial Post Environment Awards for Business, which recognizes companies and associations that have developed innovative technologies, policies or programs that benefit the environment.

Mark Stradiotto has accepted an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (1999-01) for tenure at the University of California, Berkeley, with Professor T. Don Tilley. A postgraduate level NSERC-PGSB scholarship for third and fourth years of graduate school has been awarded to Tracy Morkin (1999-01). Recipients of NSERC-PGSA scholarships include Laura Ennis(1999-01) and Edward Harder(1999-01).

The list of bursaries and scholarships awarded by McMaster University to chemistry graduate students is extensive. The Manske-MacLean Bursaries in Chemistry (1998/99) were granted to Bill Riddoch and Xiaosong Lu. Maggie Austen and Michael Gerken were presented with the James A. Morrison Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry (1998/99), while Wen Yi Jiang accepted the E. G. Brooman Bursary in Chemistry (1998/99). John Lehmann has received one of several Dalley Fellowships (1999/00, renewable for three years) and was named a Marauder Scholar for excellence in academics and athletics. Both David Stachera and Anna Trikoupis have been awarded Clifton W. Sherman Graduate Scholarships for Doctoral Study in Science and Engineering (1999/00). Craig Bridges (1999-01), John Kaldis (1999-00), and Ed Lathioor (1998-00) were selected as recipients of the newly established Raymond Moore Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (OGSST).

At the 82nd Canadian Society for Chemistry Conference and Exhibition (Toronto, May, 1999), Darren Reid(Organic Division; Ray Lemieux Award for best poster), Bruce Cook(Organic Division; best oral presentation), Adrienne Boden (Environmental Division; best oral presentation) and Neil Vasdev (Biological/Medicinal Division; best oral presentation) received honours for their outstanding contributions.
