lease use the McMaster On-Line Application System. Exemption of application fees is available to Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents at the discretion of the department. Please contact us.

Early application deadline is February 1st.
Students who apply by this deadline will:

  • be given first priority for internal (entrance) scholarships
  • be guaranteed an invitation to visit the department, if qualified.

 

 Final application deadlines are:

September - April 30th

January - September 1st

May - January 1st

The due dates mentioned above are for receiving the application.  The required documents can be sent after the due date.

Please note, applications will not be accepted past the deadline date, except under special circumstances. Consideration for internal scholarships will not be possible. If you wish to apply, please contact our Graduate Assistant, Ms. Christine Cosgrove

Prior to submitting an application, students considering graduate school should review the research interests of the faculty in the areas (inorganic, organic, etc.) in which they are particularly interested.

If you are unsure as to which group to join, and would like more information, you should email the individual faculty member or call the Department to arrange a visit.

Visits to the Department include meetings with potential supervisors as well as lunch with graduate students, who can provide valuable information about graduate life at McMaster. The costs for travel will be reimbursed (to a reasonable degree) for highly qualified students.

Required Documents


The following items are required before your online application will be considered complete.

  1. One official transcript of academic work completed to date, sent directly from the issuing institution or the applicant can send the transcript as long as it comes in a sealed envelope that was issued by the institution. If the final transcript does not show that a completed degree has been conferred, an official copy of your diploma is also required.
  2. Two confidential letters of recommendation from instructors most familiar with your academic work. Please note that McMaster University uses the Electronic Referencing System. By entering the email address of your referee through the online application, the system will automatically send an e-Reference request on your behalf. If for some reason you are unable to use the Electronic Referencing System, you can download the Reference form here »
  3. If English is not your native language, an original of your TOEFL score, or other evidence of competency in English is required from your institution. A minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 92 (580 on the paper-based TOEFL test or 237 on the computer-based TOEFL test) or a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is needed for the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology.  The GRE is not a required document.
  4. Statement of interest in pursuing graduate studies (PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR NAME ON THE STATEMENT).
