Time Limits for Financial Support

Graduate Scholarships from the Chemistry Department have the following time limits:

  • Six terms, or two years, from initial registration as a full-time M.Sc. student.
  • Twelve terms, or four years, from initial registration as a full-time Ph.D.student, either with an M.Sc. degree or after transfer from the Chemistry M.Sc program.

Scholarhips from NSERC (Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council) are available to Canadian Citizens only for the first four years of graduate studies. Separate competitions for awards cover years 1-2 (PGS M) and years 3-4 (PGS D, for Ph.D students only).

Support from OGS (Ontario Graduate Scholarships) allows a student to receive a total of four years of scholarship support whether from OGS or NSERC, or a combination.

Please consult the School of Graduate Studies website, Scholarship & Funding for more information and links concerning NSERC, OGS and other external scholarships.

Note that the time limits for departmental Graduate Scholarships do not apply to Teaching Assistantships. The regulations governing Teaching Assistantships are given in the Collective Agreement between McMaster University and the Canadian union of Educational Workers Local #6.
