Tuning up redox and photophysical properties of donor-acceptor (aza)BODIPY-based
dyads and triads toward a rational design of new light-harvesting materials

A non-covalent complexes formation between BODIPYs and aza-BODIPYs with pyrene fragment(s) attached at the - and -pyrrolic positions and nano-carbon materials (fullerenes, nanotubes, and graphene) was probed by spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and Density Functional Theory calculations. Transient absorption spectroscopy data on these non-covalent complexes were compared with the data on BODIPY-fullerene dyads in which fullerene fragments are covalently linked to the BODIPYs at the boron hub or at the peripheral positions. Unexpected photoinduced electron- and energy-transfer processes in BODIPY-fullerene and aza-BODIPY-fullerene dyads will be discussed in details.
